Explosions as a result of a terrorist attack shook Lviv, injuring 15 and killing a police officer, authorities reported overnight on Feb. 22.
“This was a terrorist attack. At present, 14 victims have been hospitalized,” Lviv Mayor Andrii Sadovyi reported. Afterwards, he said that 15 people were injured in the explosion.
The blasts took place near Lviv’s historic Old Town and shattered windows in the area.
“It has been preliminarily established that a 23-year-old policewoman was killed. A patrol car and a civilian vehicle were damaged,” the Lviv Oblast’s Prosecutor’s Office said.
The explosions occurred after police officers arrived at the scene responding to a call, Ukraine’s National Police first said in a statement.
Police officers were responding to a reported store intrusion when the first explosion erupted, and a second explosion took place when another police crew arrived at the scene, the Lviv Oblast’s Prosecutor’s Office added.
“As a result of the explosions in Lviv, there are dead and injured law enforcement officers,” the announcement read.
Explosions were heard by a Kyiv Independent journalist on the ground at approximately 12:25 a.m. local time.
Officials have not yet reported who may be behind the fatal terrorist attack as authorities continue to assess the situation.
