These are Saturday’s key updates on Israel, Gaza and the West Bank:
■ Two Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli soldiers after one of them tried to run over troops in the West Bank city of Hebron, the military said. The IDF initially claimed both Palestinians were involved in the car ramming, but later revised its statement, saying one of the Palestinians, Ziad Na’im Jabara Abu Dawud, was a bystander.
■ United Arab List party leader Mansour Abbas said his party will not cooperate with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, which has “abandoned the safety of Israeli citizens,” in an interview on Channel 12’s “Meet the Press” program.
■ Syria’s interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa accused Israel of fighting “ghosts” and searching for enemies following the war in Gaza. Al-Sharaa told an international conference in Doha that since he took power a year ago, he has been sending “positive messages,” but that Israel has rejected his overtures.
■ President Issac Herzog said he respects U.S. President Donald Trump’s “friendship and his opinion,” regarding his support for a pardon for Prime Minister Netanyahu, in an interview with Politico. Asked if he is concerned about political retaliation from Trump if he denies Netanyahu’s request, Herzog said, “Israel, naturally, is a sovereign country.”
■ German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog after arriving in Israel. The chancellor said he is “visiting Israel at a time that could hardly be more complicated,” adding that Germany will “always stand by this country.” Merz is set to meet Prime Minister Netanyahu on Sunday.
