Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in Tel Aviv that protecting civilians in Gaza is a “moral duty and a strategic imperative,” as international criticism of Israel’s offensive mounts. During his visit, Austin said the rules of war must be upheld, while reiterating what he called Washington’s “unshakable” support for Israel’s “right to defend itself.” Meanwhile, talks have resumed on a potential deal to free more than 100 hostages still held by Hamas.
