France is wrestling with the killing of an 11-year-old girl and the revelation that the man accused had been flagged to police months earlier for alleged child sex abuse—and never questioned, reports the BBC. Tens of thousands marched nationwide Monday after the body of a girl known as Lyhanna was found near Fleurance in southwest France. The suspect, 41-year-old Jerome Barella is the father of one of Lyhanna’s schoolmates, and he admits driving the girl to a pool but denies killing her. He had been reported to police in August by the mother of another girl, 10-year-old Rosa, who accused him of sexually abusing her daughter.
That complaint sat for nine months as Barella’s name surfaced in at least three other abuse allegations against minors, notes France24. Rosa’s mother is now suing the state and Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin, who has apologized to the family and acknowledged “shocking and unacceptable failings,” but says he will not resign. Darmanin has ordered a review of some 70,000 unresolved complaints involving minors, while Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu vows tougher child-protection laws, including possible life sentences for serial rapists.
