Fraternal twins Michelle and Lavinia Osbourne always knew they had some differences—but they never imagined they didn’t share a father. The British sisters, now 49, learned in 2022 through consumer DNA tests that they’re the result of an extremely rare phenomenon called heteropaternal superfecundation, in which two eggs released in the same cycle are fertilized by sperm from two different men, per the BBC. Fewer than two dozen such twin cases have been documented worldwide, and the Osbournes are said to be the only known example in the UK. Scientists note, though, that some cases may have gone undiscovered, per the Independent.
The Osbourne sisters were conceived naturally, carried in the same pregnancy, and born minutes apart in Nottingham in 1976. The revelation came after a turbulent childhood marked by foster placements and their mother’s long absences. The twins had grown up believing a man named James was their father, though he wasn’t much involved in their lives. Years later, an adult Michelle’s doubts about her resemblance to James led her to take a DNA test. The results, which arrived the day their mother died from early-onset dementia, showed James wasn’t her biological parent. Further digging pointed to another man named Alex, who struggled with addiction and homelessness. When Lavinia later took her own test, she discovered that Alex wasn’t her father, either.
It was Michelle, combing through the clues, who tracked down Lavinia’s biological father, Arthur, in West London. Lavinia quickly formed a close relationship with him, while Michelle met Alex but chose not to pursue a deeper connection. The sisters say they’ll never know how much their late mother understood about their conception, but despite the genetic surprise, they insist their relationship remains unchanged. Michelle says, “She’s my twin sister. Nothing takes away from that.” She adds they also still feel their “twin magic,” per the Guardian: “I can feel when she’s upset, and she can feel when I’m upset.”
