For the past decade, India has been synonymous internationally with its prime minister, Narendra Modi. But on Tuesday, as final election results poured in, the electorate appeared to show dissatisfaction with the status quo and placed the serial winner onto shaky ground.
Although Modi’s nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is still on course to win the election, the party will probably lose its outright majority for the first time and need to ally with others in Parliament to implement its policies.
